Windows II

“Wardlaw builds up his surfaces skillfully. What may appear to be a single smooth coating is really ten to twelve layers of paint and gel. Over and over and over again he smoothes on paint, then sands down the surface and scrapes away any bumps. White paint lies under the translucent layers, even in the darkest paintings, so this layering gives the paintings a shimmering, luminous quality, as if lit from within. With these translucent layers, the paintings illuminate themselves and animate their subliminal imagery.”
